The former United captain believes the Dutch midfielder needs a bit more time to adapt into the club’s style.
Robson says that Bruno and Pogba’s performances haven’t made things easier for Van de Beek and Dutchman has to perform well whenever called upon to impress the manager.
Speaking about Donny van de Beek’s situation at Man United, Bryan Robson said: “Some players take a little bit longer than other players.
“I think the problem for Donny, at the moment, is trying to impress the manager and get straight into the team when Bruno Fernandes has been playing magnificently.
“In the way he plays, they are very similar roles, and then the re-emergence of Paul Pogba over the last couple of months, before his injury, has been really good.
“Paul was playing how we know he can play and so that made it very difficult to get Donny into the team. But I’ve been impressed by some of his qualities.
“I can see he’s a worker; he’s just got to be a little bit patient. When he gets his chance [like against West Ham], he has got to impress Ole, as the manager.”
Van de Beek had a disappointing game against West Ham United and didn’t look too happy about being substituted for Bruno. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended his midfielder’s performance, suggesting that he actually played well and wasn’t the sole reason behind United’s drop-in performance levels in the second half against the Hammers.
